It's Christmas time, and because we've been good little mutants this year, Santa Fox has gifted us with...a re-edited Deadpool movie? Well, okay, we'll take it. Or, at least, Joe will, as he checked out the new PG-13 version of this year's sequel, ONCE UPON A DEADPOOL. Is it worth the revisit? Listen on to hear his thoughts.

But first, we discuss which mutant might make for a good Academy Awards host, and then get into the holiday spirit with a special extended edition of "Mutant Match-Up," in which we pit various X-Men characters against each other and decide which would be best at wrapping gifts, be most likely to go Christmas caroling, would be the biggest Grinch during the season, and more.

In this episode, we review the 2010 conclusion to the epic trilogy of X-Men crossover events that started with "Messiah Complex" and continued with "Messiah War." In "Second Coming," Cable and a now teenage Hope Summers have finally returned from their time-hopping adventures, and Bastion and his cabal of resurrected X-villains are intent on killing Hope, and with her the potential future of the now extremely dwindling mutant race. With their very existence on the line in a way they have never experienced before, the X-teams are forced to turn to a more militant approach in order to fight back, as Hope wrestles with her status of would-be mutant messiah, in one of the most action-packed X-events of all time. How does the crossover hold up, eight years later? We share our thoughts.

Also, we discuss what it might mean that MCU mastermind Kevin Feige apparently had script input on X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX, the importance of DEADPOOL 2's Grammy nomination, and Joe ponders whether or not to see ONCE UPON A DEADPOOL. All this, and more!

In this episode, we pay our respects to the legendary Stan "The Man" Lee, co-creator of the X-Men (with artist Jack Kirby). Lee's recent passing was felt all around the world, and of course we'd be remiss if we didn't discuss his role in the X-Universe. He might have only written 19 issues of the original title, but the entire X-Men legacy owes much to Lee...not just many of the classic characters, but also the very ideals of tolerance and acceptance that he crafted into the franchise early on. We share our own thoughts on what Lee meant to us, as well as take an alphabetical look at just some of the many characters Lee helped created during his storied run.

Plus, Trev reviews the current "Extermination" event, which is wrapping up the story of the time-displaced original teen X-Men, as well as the first issue of the brand new "Uncanny X-Men," which sees Marvel restore that name as the flagship X-title. What does Trev think of the new direction the X-books appear to be heading? Listen to find out...as well as another chapter of the still-raging "Is DIE HARD a Christmas movie" debate!

On this episode, we discuss the potential mutant influence on Disney's upcoming streaming service. As it officially gains a name (Disney+), and starts to solidify its programming line-up, we discuss what Disney's upcoming access to the X-Men might mean for the service, and pitch the X-verse shows we'd like to see joining the likes of THE MANDALORIAN and LOKI. Which X-books would we like to see adapted? What Fox-verse characters do we feel might survive the merger and benefit from a streaming show? And how might Disney+ best be used to introduce fans to the MCU version of Marvel's Merry Mutants? We answer all this, and more!

Plus, a question about the holiday movie status of THE PRINCESS BRIDE (spurred on by Fred Savage's cameo in the upcoming ONCE UPON A DEADPOOL) leads to an incredibly contentious debate about whether or not DIE HARD is a Christmas movie. And, hey, DIE HARD is a Fox property, so it's KINDA relevant!

In our Fourth Annual Halloween episode, we take a look at the x-tra spooky (or, "spoopy," if you well) 2009-2010 crossover event, "Necrosha X." The ancient energy-vampire mutant, and Black Queen of the Hellfire Club, Selene, is on a quest to achieve godhood. To do so, she must resurrect a number of deceased x-characters, creating the x-universe's version of a full-scale zombie invasion. Coming in the midst of a redefining era for the X-books, does this particular story hold up?

Plus, in a special Halloween edition of "Mutant Match-Up," we pit various x-characters against each other to determine who would give out the best candy, who would be the most likely to TP a house, who would be the least effort into their costume, and who would wear the craziest costume. Also, some general Halloween discussion, as we discuss favorite candies, cider mill trips, trick-or-treating rules, and Halloween viewing recommendations. And, for some reason...pro wrestling? So turn out the lights, light up your jack-o-lantern, and give this one a listen.

On this episode, we shine a spotlight on a character that has left a surprisingly long-shadow on the X-Men universe, despite not a lot of actual appearances in the comics themselves - Senator Robert Kelly, the mutant-hating politician turned surprising ally. What is it about this character that has left him as remembered as he is? And, in these politically charged (and often dismaying) times, can Kelly's story arc offer any hope for our future?

Plus, staying in the realm of politics, we also share our thoughts on which X-Men would make the best Supreme Court justices, U.N. Ambassadors, Secretary of Defense, and other real life positions (because these fictional mutants would almost certainly do a better job than what we actually have now). Also, some discussion of the potential possibility of an actual new Deadpool Christmas movie this December, and in another installment of "Mutant Match-Up," a Starjamming X-parent goes one-on-one with a lightning-fearing Brotherhood member in a game of bowling. Plus, thoughts on James Gunn directing a new SUICIDE SQUAD movie, comedy sequels, and Tenacious D.

Our very first official look at the upcoming DARK PHOENIX is finally here, with last week's release of the trailer. You know we have thoughts on it - does it look like a step up from APOCALYPSE? What does the footage suggest about the story? How does the knowledge that it may very well be the final Fox X-MEN film play into the experience of watching and speculating on the trailer? We discuss all this, and more.

But wait - lest you think the arrival of a trailer (complete with a then supposedly final release date) means there's finally some long desired stability in the Fox X-Universe, ha, Fox is here to remind you that they're always gonna Fox it up. And so we also take a look at yet MORE release date shuffles for DARK PHOENIX and (the allegedly still happening) GAMBIT, as well as the unexpected news of a theatrical release for a brand new PG-13 version of DEADPOOL 2.

Finally, we review the SEASON TWO premiere of FOX's THE GIFTED. After last season really found its stride in its final episodes, does this new season look like it will continue the momentum? How did we feel about this episode, and are we intrigued by the direction this year appears to be heading in?

All this, and more - including a lot of Kenan Thompson love - so listen on and enjoy!

We're back! And, perhaps more importantly, so are students, at schools all around the country. And, while it's not often the first thing people think about when considering Marvel's Merry Mutants, it's important to remember that X-MEN is - ultimately - a school book itself, as the X-Men are traditionally students and teachers at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters (or whatever it's called at the time depending which book you're reading). So we thought this was the perfect time to examine this facet of the X-books, pondering which X-Men would probably make the best teachers, what it might be like to be a student at the school, and so much more. So grab your pencils and books and join us for this special look at the academic side of the X-Men.

But first, Joe has some thoughts about a recent X-death in the comics, and - in lieu of any actual footage or anything of new Fox X-MEN movies - we instead once again talk about new rumors of behind the scenes problems with the upcoming X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX, and just Fox shenanigans in general.

After talking about doing this episode since way back when we first started this show, the recent release of (and critical and fan acclaim for) Kelly Thompson's "Mr and Mrs X" series has finally given us the perfect time to finally take an in-depth look at one of its stars, the ragin' Cajun himself - Remy LeBeau, otherwise known as Gambit! Undeniably one of the most popular and well-known X-Men characters of the modern era, Gambit also has his fair share of haters and detractors. Where we do we fall? Do we still consider Gambit a worthy addition to the X-Universe, or an embarrassing throwback to a different, "edgier" era of comics? What do we think of his powers, backstory, and overall character traits? Do we believe he has lived up to his early potential? Tune in to hear these questions and more discussed as we delve into Channing Tatum's favorite X-Man.

But first, we ponder the potential of a future X-Men theme park (possibly for the second time), sharing our proposals for mutant themed rides and attractions. We also discuss the chances of re-casting the X-Men for the MCU. And, in another installment of "Mutant Match-Up," an original New Mutant with a unique (though often mocked) power takes on a famous X-Men daughter and on-again/off-again X-Men member, in a battle for the honor of protecting YOU. All this, and more!

The 2018 San Diego Comic Con is now officially in the rear view mirror, and while there wasn't a TON of X-related news coming out of the event, there were certainly a few big tidbits worth discussing. So join us as we offer our thoughts on the two new X-titles announced by Marvel - the relaunch of "Uncanny X-Men," and the villain-centric "X-Men: Black." Plus, we take a look at the brand new trailer for season two of Fox's THE GIFTED. Can the sophomore season maintain the momentum of last season's much improved final third? This trailer is our first potential peek at the answer.

Plus, we talk about the newly revealed (alleged) release dates for NEW MUTANTS and X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX, and once again speculate on the future of the X-Men movie franchise in its current form. And, in another installment of Mutant Match-Up, a classic X-Force member and the most famous Morlock of them all go head to head in an unexpected culinary based showdown.

In 2007, a three-part saga meant to reset and redefine the X-Universe in the wake of "House of M" and Scarlet Witch's "no more mutants" declaration was kicked off with "X-Men: Messiah Complex." But, hey, we already talked about that (see Episode #79). This time, we turn our attention to the second chapter of the trilogy, the 2009 Cable & X-Force crossover event, "Messiah War." This story sees Cable and a young Hope Summers (the first mutant born after "House of M," as introduced in "Messiah Complex") jumping through time, on the run from a now villainous(?) Lucas Bishop, who is intent on murdering Hope to prevent an apocalyptic future he believes she will bring about. Joined by both Deadpool and X-Force, the secret black ops X-team recently commissioned by Cyclops to permanently eliminate threats to mutants, Cable and Hope will have to battle not only Bishop, but also classic X-villains Stryfe and Apocalypse. Does this second chapter live up to the first, and is it still - years later - an essential read for X-fans?

But first, in another installment of "Mutant Match-Up," two lesser known x-women are pitted against each other in physical combat. Plus, we discuss the news of James Gunn being fired from the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, and what it might mean for the entertainment world. All this and more, so listen on!

It's time to finally delve into the complete second season of LEGION, Noah Hawley's mind-bending FX series about David Haller, the ultra-powerful and unpredictable son of Professor X. Unlike any other X-related media you've ever seen...heck, unlike any other superhero show or movie in general...the first season of LEGION was one of the most unique takes on the comic book genre ever. Did the second season continue this trend? We dive in deep, discussing the overall storyline, the creative indulgences, the characters, and the shocking (and controversial) final episode, which completely rewrote what you think you know about the show.

But first, we pay our respects to the recently deceased Spider-Man co-creator, Steve Ditko; discuss the ramifications of Fox deciding not to show any DARK PHOENIX or NEW MUTANTS footage at San Diego Comic Con, and ponder the purpose of Wolverine's new #hotclaws! Plus, in the debut installment of our brand new segment "Mutant Match-Up," we pit two randomly chosen X-characters against each other in - this week - a battle to determine which of the two we would rather be adopted by. Don't worry...we explain it.

After an unexpected break, we have finally returned, and we're diving back into the X-Men comic world for an in-depth look at one of the most popular Wolverine stories of all time. That's right, it's finally time to x-amine OLD MAN LOGAN, from superstar creators Mark Millar and Steve McNiven. In this future-set tale, we meet an older, broken Logan, who has not popped his claws in fifty years, and lives a quiet family life in a supervillain-controlled America with no more superheroes. What led to Logan's new pacifist stance? And will a mysterious mission with an elderly, nearly-blind Hawkeye bring back the Wolverine we all know and love? We run through all eight issues of this classic 2008 event, sharing our thoughts on both the highlights and some of the more questionable elements.

But first, a brief discussion of the current ugliness plaguing the world of fandom, as well as our take on the surprising fallout of the recently released X-MEN: GOLD #30, featuring the long-awaited wedding of Kitty Pryde and Colossus. Or did it??

The much anticipated DEADPOOL 2 is finally here, and so is our slightly less anticipated review episode! What did we think of the second entry in the DEADPOOL cinematic universe? Was it as funny and/or groundbreaking as the first? Were we satisfied with the depiction of Cable, Domino, and the other new characters? And did it leave us excited for more movies starring the Merc with a Mouth? All of these questions and more will be answered as we share our thoughts on what is now 2018's ONLY X-Film! Needless to say...SPOILERS.

It's almost time for DEADPOOL 2, and we're neck deep in Deadpool promotion and hype. In the spirit of the sequel's (once again) excellent marketing, we decided to do an on-mic taste test of various Deadpool related food tie-ins. So prepare to hear us try out the special Mutant Super Soda Red Dawn Slurpee from 7-11, the Chicken Cordon Bleu Mac & Cheese and Sweet & Smoky Angus Beef microwave dinners from Devour, and Mike's Harder Lemonade and Mike's Harder Lemonade Mango.

We also discuss the new Celine Dion song and music video, "Ashes," recorded just for DEADPOOL 2. We then share our predictions on what we might see in the film itself, as well as our always impressive and dead-on box office predictions. Also, better late than never, our thoughts on AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.

NOTE: This episode was recorded hours before NBC's renewal of BROOKLYN NINE NINE. Obviously.

May 4, 2018

We're back with another installment of our audio commentary series, this time taking a look at that OTHER Logan movie from director James Mangold. That's right, it's time to revisit 2013's THE WOLVERINE, the second (and arguably somewhat forgotten) solo Wolverine film. After X-MEN: FIRST CLASS had put the X-Men film franchise back on track, this entry was under a lot of pressure to not only keep the hot streak going, but also to erase memories of the previous solo film, X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE. To do so, the filmmakers turned to a classic fan favorite story/setting, as the movie chronicle's Wolverine's adventures in Japan. While it might not be as beloved as LOGAN, this film is still a necessary step to get to that epic finale...but how does it hold up as stand-alone movie in its own right? Listen on to find out, and hear our thoughts on the film and its ultimate place in the franchise. As usual with our commentaries, watching along with us is recommended, but certainly not required.

Do you believe in life after love? First up this episode, we examine that question in a special (but somber) edition of "Chatting Tatum," as we discuss the recent news regarding Channing's personal life. Then, on a more positive note, Joe shares his thoughts on the Marvel Knights 2010 miniseries "Angel: Revelations."

Next, as crazy as the idea of an "X-Men podcast" might sound, that hasn't stopped Marvel and Stitcher from launching the recent audio drama, WOLVERINE: THE LONG NIGHT. We've listened to the early episodes, and we're here to tell you what we think about this experiment in a new form of X-Men storytelling. Finally, we review the first two episodes of LEGION Season Two. Is the show still as wild and inventive as before? Listen on to find out!

In this episode, we take a look at the 3-D's...Deadpool, Donald Glover, and delays. First up, we discuss the brand-new trailer for DEADPOOL 2, analyzing the sights and jokes, and whether or not it has made us any more excited for the film. Next up, we cover the news that Donald Glover's animated Deadpool series is no longer a go at FX, which was most surprising in that it reminded us that Donald Glover was going to have an animated Deadpool series on FX. Finally, we share our thoughts on the recently announced release date delays of X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX and NEW MUTANTS (again!). What do we think this means for Fox's X-MEN movie universe? Listen on to find out.

A new tradition is potentially born, with our first annual Mutant March Madness episode. Who is the greatest X-Men character of all time? It's a subjective question, one that is probably impossible to really answer. But that doesn't mean we won't try, with a special tournament pitting 64 of the most famous X-characters of all time against each other to determine just who is the best. Factors that determine victory include strength, uniqueness, visual design, and - if all else fails - who would probably win in a game of one-on-one basketball. Listen in as we debate each match-up based on a randomly selected first round...and only one of us can choose the winner of each contest. Possibly controversial, and certainly contentious (at times), this one was a lot of fun, so sit back and enjoy this super-sized episode as we use some of the loosest logic possible to decide just who reigns supreme in the X-Men universe.

So we finally might know why THE NEW MUTANTS has been delayed a full year, and apparently it is to add an entirely new character to the film in reshoots. In this episode, we speculate who the new addition might be, as well as what a move like this might mean for the current state of the movie in general.

But first, we look at the recent controversial proposal to arm teachers, and try our best to connect it to the world of the X-Men. Plus, we discuss the recent announcement that AVENGERS:INFINITY WAR's US release is being bumped up a week, and address the theory that DEADPOOL 2's release date had something to do with this. All this, plus A LOT of talk about SAVED BY THE BELL, including an intense debate over which had the better theme song, the original show or THE COLLEGE YEARS.

Feb 20, 2018

After over a year of watching the X-Men and other mutant teams deal with the devastating fallout of 2005's "House of M," in which the mutant population was decimated, in 2007 a three-part saga was commenced to finally pay off and bring to a climax the events set into motion by that event. In this episode, we look at the first part of that saga, the 2007 crossover event "Messiah Complex," which sees the X-Men, the Purifiers, and Mister Sinister's Marauders all fighting to gain control of the first mutant birth since "House of M." Except, what they don't know is that a thought-dead former X-Man actually has the baby...and another trusted teammate is about to betray them all in an attempt to destroy the child. "Messiah Complex" was the beginning of a new era for the X-Men, simultaneously bringing hope (literally, even) back to the mutant universe, while also kicking off an even darker, more violent tone that the books had previously seen. We discuss it all, with an in-depth discussion of the event.

But first, our thoughts on the new DEADPOOL 2 trailer, and we speculate about the recent news that Brian Michael Bendis will be teaming with Tim Miller for a mysterious X-MEN movie currently known only as "143." Plus, Trev shares his quick thoughts on BLACK PANTHER, and Joe tries very hard not to die from pure joy, as this is a very Cable-heavy episode.

In this episode, we tackle one of the most debated topics in the world of comic books: death and resurrection. As the X-MEN comics (again) bring back a number of previously deceased characters, we discuss whether this sort of storytelling tactic is still exciting and worthwhile, or just an unnecessary cheat that has devalued the narrative impact of character fates.

But first, we address a mistake we made during our review of THE GIFTED, and discuss the historical significance of LOGAN's Oscar nomination (while also trying to remember a bet we once made about the very topic). All this, plus arguably way too much talk about MTV, FRIENDS, and STAR WARS.

The first season of Fox's THE GIFTED is now in the books, which means it's time for us to take a look at the full first season. What did we think of this television take on the world of the X-Men? What worked? What didn't? Who were our favorite characters? And are we excited for the already announced second season? We answer it all, in a comprehensive discussion of the X-Men show that isn't LEGION.

But first, we ponder if the MULTIPLE MAN movie will still happen in the wake of James Franco's #TimesUp controversy, speculate on whether DEADPOOL director Tim Miller will really end up making a KITTY PRYDE movie, and try to figure out the meaning behind the recently announced release date shake-up of Fox's upcoming X-films...including a brand new episode of our podcast-within-a-podcast, "Chatting Tatum," where we also discuss GAMBIT losing ANOTHER director. After a holiday break, we're back to ring in the new year, with a whole batch of predictions for 2018. What do we believe will happen in the world of X-MEN (the movies, books, and TV) this year? Listen on to find out.

But first, discussion of the new EXILES comic series, how the recent T.J. Miller controversy might affect DEADPOOL 2, and some late recasting in LEGION season 2. Plus, talk of BACK TO THE FUTURE, THE X-FILES, THE BOONDOCK SAINTS, cold weather, and our thoughts on STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI.
